Update from January 3, 6.40 a.m .:

Since the liberation of the area around the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv from the Russian occupiers, the police say they have discovered 25 torture camps there.

In the camps, Russian troops are said to have detained and tortured civilians under inhumane conditions, regional police chief Volodymyr Tymoshko said on Facebook on Monday (January 2).

Some of the prisoners were given electric shocks, others had their fingers broken.

This information could not initially be verified independently.

The area around Kharkiv had been occupied by Russian troops for months.

They withdrew only at the beginning of September last year after a Ukrainian counter-offensive.

Since then, 920 civilian bodies have been discovered in the liberated region, including 25 children, Tymoschko said.

They were killed by Russian soldiers.

We need spare parts," said the Norwegian in an interview with British radio station BBC 4 over the weekend.

The maintenance of weapons systems that have already been delivered to Ukraine is at least as important as the debate about other weapons.

NATO must be prepared to support Ukraine in the long term, Stoltenberg said.

There have been no signs from Russia that it has given up on its overriding goal of taking over Ukraine.

“The Ukrainian armed forces had the upper hand for several months.

But we also know that Russia has mobilized many new forces, many of whom are now being trained.” He added: “This indicates that they are ready to continue the war and may try to launch a new offensive.”

News about the Ukraine war: Russia is preparing for a decisive battle

First report from Friday, December 30th:

According to British information, a Russian troop formation in a contested area in eastern Ukraine is likely to be given new leadership.

Lieutenant-General Yevgeny Nikiforov is likely to be in the process of assuming command of Russia's Western Forces Group (WGF), the UK MoD wrote in its regular intelligence update.

He would therefore be at least the fourth commander at the head of the association since the beginning of the Ukraine war.

According to British assessments, the WGF almost certainly has the task of holding Russia's right flank in the area around the cities of Kreminna and Swatove.

The Ukrainian military reported progress near Kreminna on Thursday (December 29).

An American think tank had previously announced that the Russian army was gathering troops in the Luhansk region and preparing for a decisive battle.
