Iran threatened France today (Wednesday) that it will respond to the cartoons of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei published in the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

The magazine, known for its controversial illustrations, especially towards Muslims, published dozens of cartoons of Khamenei as part of a competition it launched last month to support the protests in Iran.

"The insulting and disrespectful act done by a French magazine by publishing cartoons against the religious and political authority will not pass without an effective and decisive response," warned Iran's Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir-Abdallihan, in a tweet.

"We will not allow the French government to cross the border. Without a doubt, they chose the wrong path."

The French magazine, which has been the target of a series of attacks in recent years, said that the competition was intended to "express support for the struggle of the Iranians fighting for their freedom."

The protests erupted in Iran after Mehsa Amini, a young Kurdish woman who was arrested for not wearing a hijab properly, died in custody on September 16.

Hundreds of people have been killed since then, and the regime blames foreign countries for fomenting the protests.

The magazine published the cartoons in a special edition to mark the anniversary of the deadly attack on its offices in Paris on January 7, 2015, when two al-Qaeda terrorists opened fire on the site in retaliation for illustrations mocking Muhammad.
