At about 0:35 am on July 24, 2022, members of the Special Duty Team of Sha Tin Police District carried out an operation to crack down on illegal gambling. They raided an industrial building on Au Pui Wan Street in Sha Tin and smashed an illegal gambling establishment.
Officers arrested a 41-year-old local man and a 47-year-old local woman on suspicion of "operating a gambling establishment".
In addition, 8 men and 1 woman aged between 27 and 58 were arrested on suspicion of "gambling in a gambling establishment", including a 36-year-old off-duty male police officer who was suspended pending investigation.
In addition, among the arrested persons, 7 men and 1 woman and 4 men and 1 woman were suspected of violating the gathering restriction order and the mask order respectively, and were issued fixed penalty notices.
The case is now being followed up by the third team of the Sha Tin District Crime Squad.
The police said that after further investigation and seeking legal advice, the off-duty male police officer has been charged with one count of "gambling in a gambling establishment". The case will be brought up in Sha Tin Magistrates' Court tomorrow (5th) morning.
