A crisis that hasn't happened in a century:
another effort to find a suitable candidate to replace Nancy Pelosi failed, this after the Republican camp in Congress was unable to reach an agreement on the election of Kevin McCarthy, who was supported by former President Donald Trump.
The political crisis deepened this evening (Wednesday) and reflects the fragile and polarized situation in the American House of Representatives and especially on the Republican side of the map.
McCarthy, a lawmaker from California, did not receive the required 21 Republican votes and instead, his camp colleagues voted for 44-year-old Byron Donalds.
Kevin McCarthy,
"Close the deal, take the victory," former President Trump wrote earlier on his social network and urged his party members: "Republicans, don't turn a big victory into a huge and embarrassing defeat."
Even earlier, US President Joe Biden referred to the chaotic situation that also projects on American governance and said in this context that "the whole world is watching".
The last time such a crisis hit the House of Representatives was no less than a hundred years ago, when even then the Republican Party faced a deep crisis.
