The health of the governor of the Bolivian region of Santa Cruz, the opponent Luis Fernando Camacho imprisoned last Friday, is fragile because of a blood problem, his lawyer said on Tuesday.

"

He is in a delicate state of health

," said lawyer Juan Carlos Camacho - unrelated to the governor - while his client is incarcerated in the maximum security prison of Chonchocoro, west of the capital. La Paz.

According to his advice, he suffers from “

Churg-Strauss syndrome

”, an inflammation of the blood vessels that is still unrecognized.

"Rebellion"

Luis Fernando Camacho, himself a lawyer, was arrested on the orders of the prosecution who accuse him of having fomented a "

coup

" in November 2019 against the left-wing ex-president Evo Morales, who left power this year.

Also accused of "

terrorism

", he was remanded in custody for four months.

Juan Carlos Camacho explained that a space had been set up in the prison so that his client could receive specialized medical follow-up to which he had not had access until then.

For the director of the penitentiary establishments of the country, Juan Carlos Limpias, the state of health of the prisoner is “

absolutely stable

” and the “

required drugs are administered to him

Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in major cities in Bolivia on Tuesday to demonstrate against the imprisonment of the governor of Santa Cruz, the economic heart of the country.

Luis Fernando Camacho, one of the main Bolivian opposition figures, has always denied having supported a coup and claims that Evo Morales has resigned.

He also claims that a report by the Organization of American States (OAS) confirmed the presence of irregularities in the 2019 presidential election, during which Mr. Morales, then in power since 2006, was seeking a new mandate until 2025.
