For the first time in Israel: a fast charging station without upgrading the infrastructure

2023-01-04T04:53:10.857Z

The Afcon company inaugurated the first charging station based on the kinetic amplification technology of the Israeli Zooz Power. The technology makes it possible to install ultra-fast charging stations without upgrading the existing electricity network

The energy and charging companies are trying to catch up with the growth rate in the sale of electric cars in Israel.

In the last year alone, more than 27,000 electric cars hit the roads, and the rate of deployment of fast charging stations is increasing, but still not catching up with the growth rate in the number of electric vehicles.

One of the significant obstacles in the deployment of fast charging stations is the need for an expensive upgrade of the electricity infrastructure at the designated site, an upgrade whose cost can reach hundreds of thousands of shekels.

One of the options for solving the problem is kinetic amplification technology developed by the Israeli company Zooz Power.

The technology makes it possible through a facility built next to the charging station and containing a large flywheel to store electrical energy and speed up the charging rate beyond what the existing electricity infrastructure allows.

Zooz's amplifier makes it possible to increase the charging rate by 100 kilowatts, which are added to the 50 kilowatts that the standard electrical infrastructure allows at most gas stations.

The result is the possibility of ultra-fast charging at a rate of 150 kilowatts, which significantly shortens the charging time of the batteries in an electric vehicle.

The first joint charging station of Afcon and Zooz was inaugurated on Monday at the Dor Alon station in Zichron Yaakov.

This is a pilot station that will test the effectiveness of the new technology, if and when the pilot is crowned as successful, Afcon is expected to establish additional charging stations with this technology.

The charging price is similar to that of other ultra-fast stations and is NIS 2 per kWh.
