However, formulated in his encyclical
God is love,
it nevertheless constituted the essence of his message.
In a way as clear as it is profound, this encyclical aimed to situate the two Greek names for love,
eros
and
agape
, in relation to each other .

eros
is in no way condemned by Christianity.

agapè
, because it embodies a
"promise of happiness"
from which one can start to practice what Hegel called an
"Aufhebung",
a going beyond
eros
within
agapè
, but a a surpassing that does not cancel
eros
: on the contrary, it preserves it in a more ambitious and happier synthesis.
