An indictment submitted yesterday (Monday) to the District Court in Nazareth shows the routine of the arms trade and the conduct of the lively market of buying and selling weapons.

The indictment describes a process of trading 4-M weapons for NIS 70,000.

The investigation began a few weeks ago, after the police station in Tiberias received intelligence information about a number of shooting incidents in the Marar area.

In the investigation opened under the command of Corporal Aviv Ben Zino, a police officer at the Tiberias station, the investigators tracked down several suspects, including four brothers from Tuba-Zangaria village aged 17, 23, 27 and 28.

After a lot of information was gathered, about a month ago the police of the northern district raided a house in the village and located a stockpile of weapons that included an improvised submachine gun, a hand grenade, cartridges and a lot of ammunition.

Following the arrest of the four brothers and additional information discovered in the investigation, two more suspects were arrested - another resident of Toba-Zangaria and a resident of Merar.

Some of the detainees were known from past shooting incidents, but until then, not enough evidence had been collected to draw up indictments for weapons offenses against them.

It turned out that the six detainees were involved in the trade in an M-4 rifle for which they intended to pay NIS 70,000.

The indictment states that one of the brothers wanted to purchase a rifle, and for that purpose another brother connected him with another resident of Tuva-Zangaria, and this connected him with a resident of Merar.

The three arranged to meet and travel together to the village of Ivtin in the Haifa area, when they got there the rifle was shown to the buyer and he sent pictures to his two brothers who did not come to the place, so that they could be impressed by the goods.

Then the two brothers who remained behind convinced their brother to shoot the weapon and send them a sound recording, so that they could hear and be impressed by the sounds of the gunfire.

Therefore, the three went to the industrial area of Ivtin, where he fired a weapon and at the request of his brother sent them a video.

The weapon in question was not seized, but the police and the North District Attorney's Office believe that the evidence collected is sufficient to formulate and file an indictment for weapons offenses, each defendant according to his part.

These are the crimes of carrying a weapon, attempting to purchase a weapon, firing a firearm, solicitation to carry a weapon, solicitation to fire a firearm and attempt to trade in weapons.

In their investigations, the suspects claimed that it was not a real rifle, but an "airsoft" rifle that was identical in appearance to an original machine gun.

Identical claims raised in the trial of two defendants accused of trafficking and shooting weapons.

Although the Nazareth District Court was shown videos of rifle and pistol shooting and still photographs of weapons in the hands of the defendants, the judges ruled that it is not possible to prove with the help of the photos and videos that they are weapons as defined by law - and acquitted the two of the crimes they were accused of.

Now, the police said that they have a professional and unequivocal opinion, according to which the rifle that was photographed in the hands of the accused is a firearm and not just a rifle that was pretended to be a real rifle.

It will be interesting to see if in that court the judges will adopt the expert's opinion on behalf of the prosecution.

This case summarizes the year 2022, during which more than 1,000 weapons were seized in the northern district: 664 rifles and pistols, 401 grenades, 36 explosive devices and 18 explosive devices.
