The case of the alleged Russian spy Carsten L. is shaking the republic.

Now it turns out: He lived in a small town in Upper Bavaria – as a youth football coach.

Munich – Carsten L. – when the name of the suspected spy, who is said to have revealed state secrets on behalf of Russia, first appeared in the press shortly before Christmas, some citizens in the Upper Bavarian town thought: Funny, I also know a Carsten L. Schnell when it becomes serious for fun, the first rumors start to spread in the village.

A woman says her diving acquaintance Carsten L. is the spy, a long-time trainer colleague of Carsten L., uncharacteristically, does not get an answer to the Christmas greetings on the cell phone, the message was not even received.

Someone else, neighbors of Carsten L., report a raid on his house just before Christmas – that's how the picture is condensed.

Carsten L. has an imperious tone that some parents don't go down well with

A call to Carsten L.'s wife finally brings clarity: she emphasizes her husband's presumption of innocence and rumbles, "then just bring an article, preferably large with a picture, so that everyone knows who it is about".

She wants to protect her children, the couple L. have a daughter and a son, both of whom have just outgrown their adolescence – a world has collapsed for them.

In order not to make life even more difficult for you and your mother, all details in this report are anonymised.

Carsten L. first appeared in the local football club around ten years ago. As a youth coach he looks after teams of all ages.

He is also active on the board of directors and has worked for many years as a youth leader.

His manner takes some getting used to: he has an imperious tone that doesn't go down well with some parents - as a result of his work in the Bundeswehr, some think with a shrug, that's how you become.

Some parents don't want their children to play under Carsten L., others have no problems with him because he doesn't favor or disadvantage anyone, but treats everyone equally.

The children have fun in training, especially when Carsten L. demonstrates exercises himself and often messes up because he's not the greatest soccer player.

Former BND employee in custody on suspicion of serious treason

Carsten L. recently resigned from the board of directors, when he was clearing out AfD materials were found, which embarrassed his successors.

Until last fall he was in charge of the A youth team, in which his son also plays, since then he has only been there as a supervisor at the games - he no longer had time because he had been transferred to Berlin, as he said.

Nobody in the club knew that he was a Bundeswehr officer in the service of the BND, and most are shocked by the current revelation.

In its latest issue, Der

Spiegel

reports that Carsten L. worked as head of department in the “Technical Intelligence” department and was frustrated in his job – he is said not to have become a spy for financial reasons.

He is said to have been blown because another Western secret service discovered a data set in the Russian security apparatus that could clearly be assigned to the BND.

Carsten L. was identified as a possible Russian informant, he had been monitored for weeks, writes

Der Spiegel

Carsten L. himself has not yet commented on the allegations, and it is also unclear how long data and how much information has been passed on to the Russians.

He is accused of "serious treason", which, depending on the severity of the crime, can be punished from several years in prison to life imprisonment.

It is probably the biggest case of espionage in recent history in Germany - from a youth football coach from a small town in Upper Bavaria.
