"Like a box in the stomach": the racist message received by the famous food blogger Israel today

2023-01-05T16:00:17.421Z

In response to a story that Keren Agam shared on her recipe website about an Arab dish that she used to cook for her children when they were small, she received a message from a surfer who said: "I hate Arabs" • Agam to "Israel Today": "It hurts me that someone writes such a thing about someone without knowing them."

Keren Agam is one of the most influential food bloggers in Israel, with 228,000 followers on Instagram and a food show she presents, but that didn't stop her from receiving a particularly difficult message today (Thursday), which she received on her recipe website.

The response was sent to Agam in response to a personal story she shared, in which she told about an Arab nanny who used to cook food for her children when they were small.

"I am not a political activist," she emphasizes in a conversation she had with "Israel Today" following the publication of the announcement.

"It's boxing in the stomach."

"Hey Keren!", was written at the beginning of the message in question sent to the food blogger, and was a trigger for the story she uploaded afterwards.

"An excellent recipe, as usual! I want to point out that I hate Arabs and I think there is nothing good they can do!", he continued.

Agam uploaded the screenshot of the message that was sent, and added on top of it.

"Forever messages of this kind will give me a box in the stomach. The post on the website is about food, it is a written recipe with a story about the children who were small and their nanny, who was an Arab from Jaffa, and what she would cook for them," she explained.

"I thought about whether to publish it or not, because I don't like political debates," Agam told us in a conversation we had with her on the subject.

"I'm not a person who argues politically. I don't want to hurt my fellow neighbors in Jaffa. It gives me a kick in the stomach, but I do think it's something that should be accepted."

"This response came out of nowhere. I have lived in Jaffa for 20 years. I found my home here, I am simply a person who chose to raise my children in a place that contains everything from everything. There are Jews, Muslims and Christians here, a very large mix of population, and here I chose to raise my children in order to That they will not live in 'la la land'. This is the country, this is the place, this is the complexity," she states.

"I have happy children who grow up here with friends from all over the spectrum, my house is full of children of all religions. I have a child who attends a school where he is almost the only Jewish child, which is amazing and natural," she shares her feelings.

"There is no political discourse here," she repeated and emphasized to us following the condemnation of the racist things.

"It didn't come from an agenda. They had an Arab nanny because I found her and she liked me. We love people. It pains me that someone would write such a thing about someone without knowing them at all."
