Never heard of the Drake Passage?

That could change soon: TikTok users and cruise travelers are discovering the straits for themselves.

Apparently, many cruise travelers are currently not driven to the sunny corners of the earth, but to where shivering is actually the order of the day: namely to Antarctica.

There, users of the short video platform TikTok discovered the so-called Drake Strait, also known as the Drake Passage.

This is the strait between the southern tip of South America and the northernmost part of the Antarctic Peninsula.

It is considered to be one of the roughest and stormiest bodies of water in the world.

"Antarctica does not cost admission, the price is the Drake Passage", is the favorite saying of many expedition leaders, as the travel portal

Travelbook

reports.

And that is exactly what can be seen in the videos that cruise passengers film on board while crossing the passage.

her clip, for example, which shows her honeymoon on a ship bound for Antarctica.

Featuring a series of stunning nature shots surrounding the polar region, during the Drake Strait the newlyweds had to retire to their cabin and take anti-nausea medication to survive the voyage without seasickness.

When you look out the window, you can see the roaring waves pounding meters high against the cabin windows.

In the stairways, on the other hand, it is hardly possible to walk straight ahead - instead, passengers roll on the floor.

@mylifesatravelmovie This is my 6th #drakepassage crossing and can confirm that yes, it is that bad.

Passengers in another clip have trouble keeping drinks and food on the table — and chairs move around the cabins as if by magic.

@spoonful_of_sarah Replying to @moira We had both ends of the spectrum 🙈 It's probably the thing I was most nervous about beforehand, but it's honestly manageable and we even had fun when it got wild!

"Would throw up in the beam": TikTok users react to rough seas in Antarctica

Depending on the weather, a full crossing by ship takes about two full days, as the cruise operator and specialist for ship trips in the polar region, Poseidon Expeditions, writes on its website.

In rough seas, however, travelers have to stay below deck, where they can hide behind shatterproof glass.

The comments show that many users have respect for the waves in the Drake Passage: "Would walk around in a life jacket," says one user at the sight, for example.

Another fears he "would puke in the jet" if he had to go through it.

But some are also fascinated by the force of nature and would like to set off for Antarctica immediately.

At least there seems to be a trend here: many TikTok users comment in the comments that they are currently being shown an extremely large number of posts about Antarctic trips.

"Is everyone actually in the Drake Passage?" asks a user.

Impressive pictures are always the result.
