After a violent crash in Berlin on New Year's Eve, the emergency services in the Ebersberg district also took stock.

District - Every year in the days before and after New Year's Eve the question arises: Should firecrackers be banned?

On New Year's Eve there were riots in Berlin against police and firefighters.

While putting out a burning vehicle, they were "massively attacked with firecrackers," police tweeted.

A total of 19 officers were injured.

The escalation exacerbates the question of a Böll ban on New Year's Eve.

But while there was violence and attacks on the emergency services elsewhere in Germany on New Year's Eve, the district recorded a quiet turn of the year.

The police and emergency services do not report any extraordinary operations

There were no New Year's Eve specific missions, explains Martha Stark, head of the rescue service and deputy managing director of the BRK district association Ebersberg.

No riots, nowhere did it crack.

“Not with us!” she emphasizes.

In the past few years, there hasn't been a noticeable trend that there were more bets on New Year's Eve than in the rest of the year.

"New Year's Eve is always action-packed," says Ulrich Milius, head of the Ebersberg Police Inspectorate.

However, he puts it into perspective straight away: “When many people come together and drink together, there is always a fight.

But that has nothing to do specifically with New Year's Eve. "More patrols were on the road in the district, but there were no more operations than during the year.

"There were also no riots against emergency services or damage to property," emphasizes the police chief.

"Especially not to the extent that was the case in Berlin."

Deployment for the fire brigade only after midnight

Andreas Heiss, district fire officer in the district, also explains that he has not received any feedback about acts of violence or riots towards the fire brigade.

"It was a quiet night until midnight," he says.

Around three quarters past one there were a few operations because of container or garbage can fires.

He cannot say exactly how the fires started, that is not certain and is ultimately also the task of the police.

However, according to the firefighter, his suspicion is that batteries, in which several rockets are ignited one after the other with a fuse, had not yet cooled down and were thrown away.

"And then maybe they went off again in the bin," he suspects.

Celebrating together instead of a ban on firecrackers

Rescue services and the police do not want to be carried away by a statement about a possible ban on firecrackers.

Heiss offers a counter-suggestion: the fire brigade would find it sensible to let fireworks take place in an orderly and targeted manner at certain points.

"Not everyone for themselves," he explains, "but put the whole thing in professional hands."
