China reiterated Thursday that it has "shared information and data with the international community in an open and transparent manner, since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic," after the World Health Organization (WHO) on Wednesday asked Beijing to share more data with the agency and other relevant databases.

"China has carried out close cooperation with the WHO over the years," Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) spokesman Mao Ning said at a daily briefing.

The MoFA spokesperson listed at least four technical meetings with the WHO since China recently honed its Covid response measures, adding that the WHO “has noted on many occasions that the technical meetings between China and the WHO have gone smoothly and have produced positive results."

Mao added that since the beginning of the pandemic, China has "maintained open channels for close communication at three levels with WHO headquarters, the Western Pacific Regional Office and the China Representative Office."

“Preliminary figures show that since a covid infection was first reported, the two sides have had more than 60 technical exchanges on containment, treatment, vaccine research and development, and tracing of covid origins,” it added.

Mao also said that since the beginning of the pandemic, China has "shared the genome sequence of the virus at the earliest opportunity, making important contributions to the research and development of medicines and vaccines in countries around the world."
