Agency 1 Sports, the agency that represents Bills safety Damar Hamlin, tweeted: "Damar has improved substantially overnight."

Damar Hamlin's agent, Rob Butler, told CNN that the injured Buffalo Bills player is awake and has been holding hands with his relatives at the hospital.

“The outpouring of support for Damar across the country has been incredible,” the statement shared on social media reads.

“Thank you for the calls, messages and emails.

“Damar has improved substantially overnight.

We are so thankful for all the first responders, doctors and hospital staff and everyone who has played a role in this process.

Please continue to pray for Damar and we will provide updates as they become available."

For its part, the Buffalo Bills team said the athlete has "shown notable improvement in the last 24 hours," according to an update shared on the team's Twitter account.

"Although he is still seriously ill, he has shown that he appears to be neurologically intact," the update added.

"His lungs continue to heal and he is making steady progress."

The 24-year-old suffered cardiac arrest in the middle of a game on Monday, after which he remains sedated and on a ventilator while doctors work to get him to breathe on his own.

His collapse on the field led to the suspension of the Bills' game against the Cincinnati Bengals, stunning a packed stadium that moments before had vibrated with Hamlin's tackle of a Bengals wide receiver.

Ten seconds after the collapse, the Bills team coaches were tending to the player.

He was brought to the field by ambulance in less than five minutes, footage shows, and was given CPR, according to an ESPN broadcast.

“Hamlin received immediate medical attention on the field from the team and local independent medical and paramedical personnel.

He was later transported to a local hospital where he is in critical condition,” the NFL said.

The league declined to provide an update or more details on Hamlin's condition during a late-night call with reporters.

In an interview with CNN, Dorrian Glenn, Damar Hamlin's uncle, said his nephew was revived twice.

“His heart stopped, so they had to revive him twice.

They revived him in the field before taking him to the hospital and then they revived him a second time when he was transferred to the hospital,” he said.

The Buffalo Bills said Wednesday that Hamlin was showing "signs of improvement" while he remained in critical condition in the intensive care unit.

The NFL game between the Cincinnati Bengals and Buffalo Bills, which was postponed in the first quarter after Bills safety Damar Hamlin went into cardiac arrest and collapsed on the field, was the telecast of Most-watched "Monday Night Football" in ESPN history, averaging 23.8 million viewers, according to preliminary ratings.
