The Schaftlach Edeka market in Hainz is a family business, the only one of its kind in the area.

Anneliese Hainz runs it with energy and drive, the turnover is right.

But because it's hard to find staff, the small supermarket is now closed on Mondays.

A decision that Hainz found difficult.

Schaftlach – Even Anneliese Hainz's grandfather (58) stood at the bar in the pretty building on Alex-Gugler-Straße.

At that time it was still a bakery, founded by Johann Schmiedl in 1905.

"Then the business came into the hands of women," smiles the granddaughter.

Her mother, Anneliese Lanzinger, took over the bakery and expanded the range, resulting in a grocery store.

Anneliese Hainz has been the director since 1992, and in 1994 she invested in a major renovation.

Today she runs a full-range retailer under the Edeka flag on 350 square meters of retail space.

Schaftlach is part of the municipality of Waakirchen in the district of Miesbach.

Anneliese Hainz is happy to run her Edeka supermarket in Schaftlach.

But in the meantime, staff has become so scarce that the opening hours have to be reduced.

Edeka boss has to reduce opening hours: "People are grateful that we're here"

A small supermarket where many shank laughers can buy everything they need without having to get in the car.

"A lot of people come to us with prams," says Hainz.

She likes her customers and her work.

"People are grateful that we're here," says Hainz.

There is no lack of appreciation or sales.

But to employees who can also run the shop when the boss is not there.

Edeka-Markt Hainz is the last supermarket in town: "There used to be three here"

"We always caught it all," reports Hainz.

We, that is her husband Gerhard and daughter Josefa Schmiedl.

After two years without a holiday, the Hainz couple decided not to open the shop on Mondays anymore.

"I'm very sorry," assures Anneliese Hainz.

Especially since it is the only grocery store in Schaftlach.

"There used to be three here," Hainz remembers.

Working in retail unpopular: "People are migrating to the office"

The search for personnel has been difficult for a few years.

"It's the same for everyone," Hainz knows.

There is a shortage of skilled workers everywhere and working in retail is exhausting.

"People migrate to the office," reports Hainz.

She doesn't want to sing a lament now: "I'm not like that." But the past two years have added to her strength.

According to Hainz, she used to hire staff to give herself breaks.

"But that doesn't work anymore today."

New forces usually don't stay long - Monday off "chosen because of my employees"

Hainz has repeatedly hired new employees over the past two years.

Unfortunately, they usually didn't stay long, there were many sick leave.

"We have a good atmosphere in the team," says Hainz.

So that this is maintained, Monday will now be a day off for everyone.

"I chose Monday because of my employees," explains Hainz.

Nobody has to work from Saturday noon to Tuesday, it's a long weekend.

"I want to keep the people I have," says Hainz.

That's why she accepts that Monday, a day with a high turnover, will be lost.

"Wednesday is actually the least busy," reports Hainz.

It would also be very happy to open it again on all working days – if there were staff.

We are currently looking for a full-time salesperson and a cashier, or part-time employees.

Fortunately, customers understand the step, says Hainz.

You know each other well, you know about the stress.

"People say, treat yourself to Monday." The family hopes that the reduction in opening hours will be enough of a measure to keep the shop running.

Daughter Josefa, who has just become the mother of a third child, would like to continue the business, says Hainz.

But this will only be possible if reliable employees can be found.

The fresh food market in Hainz will close completely for a week in January.

From January 16th to 21st, Anneliese Hainz will close her doors to finally catch up on her postponed vacation.

The travel destination is designed entirely for relaxation, as Hainz explains: "We're going to a lonely island."
