Funeral of Benedict XVI: what is a "doctor of the Church"?

2023-01-05T06:05:24.730Z

DECRYPTION - Cardinal Ratzinger, who became pope after the death of John Paul II, produced recognized theological teaching throughout his life. Voices are raised to make him a "doctor" of the Catholic Church.

The Church has lost a humble pope, a man of faith, and a recognized theologian.

Since the last day of the year 2022, tributes abound after the discreet death of Benedict XVI, who lived in the shadow of the century a life of silence and prayer since his historic renunciation of the See of Peter in 2013.

The pope emeritus "

marked the Church with the seal of his theological erudition

", notably greeted the Élysée in a laudatory press release, welcoming "

an enlightened interlocutor of France

" and "

the power of his writings

".

"

He will go down in history as a great doctor of the Church

", even ventured the German-Austrian theologian Maximilian Heim in the columns of the weekly

Christian Family

.

A very rare occurrence in the history of the Church, of the four popes who preceded him, three were canonized and one was beatified.

We have to go back to the 8th century, then even further under the Western Roman Empire to find such harvests of great popes.
