In the charts of his travels abroad, Rome comes in second place, behind Algiers.
Rome, an obligatory destination for a Minister of the Interior who must permanently deal with Italy on immigration issues;
Rome, a popular destination for Gérald Darmanin, also in charge of relations with religions.
The Vatican was his very first trip abroad as Minister of the Interior, in July 2020, and during the year that ended, he participated in the canonization of Charles de Foucauld, then in the elevation of the Archbishop of Marseille, Mgr Jean-Marc Aveline, to the dignity of cardinal.
It is therefore as Minister of Worship that he represented France this Thursday at the funeral of Benedict XVI.
An obvious choice.
Since only two states, Italy and Germany, were officially invited by the Holy See, no other country was required to be represented at the highest level of protocol, even if the presidents of Poland, Portugal, Hungarian…
