Would Lyon's attractiveness be in the dark?
The figures from the 2020 Insee census which have just been published mention in any case a drop in the population in the hyper center of Lyon.
The peninsula as well as the plateau of the Croix Rousse have thus lost inhabitants compared to the previous one of 2014.
With a drop of 1.1% and now 30,108 inhabitants, the 1st arrondissement becomes the least populated.
“
We have seen the consequences of this recently with the closure of the Lévi-Strauss school and several classes at the Lamartine school”
, observes Pierre Oliver, mayor of the 2nd arrondissement – which includes the southern part of the Peninsula – and LR leader on city council.
AirBnB, rodeos and difficult traffic
A 2nd arrondissement where the development of the Confluence is struggling to compensate for departures from the Bellecour-Jacobins sector.
The population is stagnating there, after a decline over the previous period.
The elected official points to the development of furnished tourist accommodation and office premises replacing housing, but also the constraints of city life with reduced accessibility, noise pollution and insecurity linked to "a
series of incessant urban rodeos between 2018 and 2020
”.

on this subject, the ecological town hall of Lyon, which took over responsibility in 2020, has not responded to our requests for the moment.
It is on the plateau of the Croix Rousse that the fall is the most marked.
With a decrease of 1.3%, to 36,094 inhabitants.
A trend that the real estate agents questioned on these sectors do not feel, however.
“The escape to post-covid greenery is now over”
, assures Franck Vitali, of the Century 21 network.
2,300 new Lyonnais per year
What is certain is that overall, the Lyonnais are always more numerous.
Nearly 15,000 more in 6 years, for a total population of 528,633 inhabitants.
The majority of which in the 3rd arrondissement, more populated on its own than cities like Roubaix, Créteil or Poitiers with its 102,789 inhabitants.
The strongest growth is very largely due to the 5th arrondissement, which has gained more than 10,000 inhabitants to exceed 50,000, more thanks to the development of the Point du Jour district than in Old Lyon.
The 7th also continues to progress (84,788 inhabitants) after the explosion of the previous period linked to the requalification of many wastelands south of the railway.
Ditto for the 6th (53,448 inhabitants), 8th (86,996) and 9th arrondissements (53,174);
the latter taking advantage, among other things, of real estate programs on the banks of the Saône.
