Cheryl L. Johnson, Secretary of the House of Representatives

"No spokesman was chosen."

"No spokesman was chosen."

"No spokesman was chosen."

Three more ballots – and again no result.

The speaker election in the US House of Representatives finally turns into a farce.

Even on the second day of voting, after six ballots, none of the candidates received the required absolute majority.

There hasn't been more than one ballot here for a hundred years.

Actually, the Republicans could choose their candidate Kevin McCarthy with their narrow majority.

But there are stubborn dissenters in their own ranks.

Roland Nelles, DER SPIEGEL

“All this confusion, this chaos here surrounding the election of the Speaker in the House of Representatives, it really only shows how divided the Republican Party is.

The ›Grand Old Party‹ is really in a desolate state.

There are different currents that want to pull the party in different directions.

And the party just doesn't come together.«

The blockers paralyze everything, apparently in concert.

Above all, they are ultra-rightists and supporters of the ousted US President Donald Trump.

His request to finally vote for McCarthy fizzled out without effect.

Lauren Boebert, Republican Representative

“My favorite president even called us and told us we had to stop this.

I think the opposite is the case.

The President needs to tell Kevin McCarthy, 'Sir, you don't have enough votes and it's time to retire.'"

Roland Nelles, DER SPIEGEL

»These are people like Lauren Boebert from Colorado, a member of parliament who is basically only here to say no to everything, to fight the 'deep state', i.e. the alleged state within a state.

These are people who were sent here by their constituents to basically fight the entire politics of Washington.

If they were to compromise, in any form here with the Washington establishment, as they say, that would be a betrayal of their own voters.

That's how crazy this whole thing is."

Without a chair, the House of Representatives is incapable of action.

This total blockade by a few MPs could therefore not only intensify the dispute within the Republican Party, but also affect the entire political process in the USA.

The incumbent US President assessed the event as follows:

Joe Biden, US President

“That's not my problem.

I just think it's embarrassing that it's taking so long because of how they treat each other there.

And the rest of the world is watching and seeing if we can pull ourselves together here.”

Roland Nelles, DER SPIEGEL

»US President Joe Biden is observing the whole thing here with a mixture of malice, but also with concern.

He also has to fear that nothing is progressing here.

But he also has a small advantage: he could try to win over moderate Republican representatives in the House of Representatives.

Then Biden could actually move things forward.

And then these radical members of parliament, that is, the right-wing radicals, the blockers would also lose some of their power.

And that would of course be an interesting variant.

But we'll have to wait and see if that happens.

Of course, all of this can also lead to an absolute catastrophe here, namely that nothing is progressing at all."
