Campaign promise of the environmentalist majority, the pedestrianization of the city center has not yet started in Lyon.
If a general presentation of the project and the feedback from the consultation which ended on October 30 is scheduled for February, we already know a little more about what promises to be one of the biggest projects of Grégory's mandate. Sweet.
The mayor of Lyon mentioned on Wednesday the possibility of making the whole of rue de la République pedestrian, including the section between rue Grenette and the Hôtel-de-Ville, the only part still accessible today by public transport. and taxis.
"
The result of the consultation is that more than 60% of those questioned are in favor of Rue de la République becoming entirely pedestrianized.
“, Pleaded the city councilor EELV who assured that this pedestrianization was going to be done.
Traffic lanes removed?
It now remains to be seen where the buses and taxis that still circulated today in this main artery of the Presqu'île de Lyon will pass.
The scenarios considered during the consultation provided for deporting them to rue Grenette, the only way currently allowing them to cross the center of Lyon in a west-east direction between Bellecour and the Hôtel-de-Ville.
This street, which is still open to cars, would thus become reserved exclusively for public transport and cyclists.
The Presqu'ile under construction during the municipal elections of 2026
Full details of these developments will be made public in February.
As for the pedestrianization schedule, Grégory Doucet assures that it “
is not fixed
”, but plans to put in place a method “
of quick gains.
That is to say, to start with sites where it can be done quickly
”.
Larger jobs may take a little longer.
Will they be carried out during this mandate, that is to say before 2026?
The question remains open.
According to our information, the idea of starting major works, which will paralyze the city center, shortly before the next municipal election, worries among the environmental majorities of the city of Lyon and the metropolis.
Next spring, Greater Lyon must also present its project to redevelop the right bank of the Rhône.
Project which plans to reduce the place of the car on this side of the river and whose final developments are expected for 2025.
