The authorities in Mexico announced that they arrested Ovidio Guzman, the son of the well-known drug lord Joaquin Guzman, "El Chapo" during a raid by a special military unit near the airport of the city of Culiacan in the state of Siniloa in northern Mexico.
According to reports from the city, the arrest was preceded by a prolonged shootout between members of the Siniloa drug cartel and the military and police forces, and several vehicles caught fire near the city's airport.
No casualties were reported in the fighting.
Guzmán is considered to be a senior figure in the cartel and one of the leaders of the emerging criminal organizations in northern Mexico.
The arrest is a blow to the "Siniloa" cartel, whose power has decreased significantly since the arrest of Joaquin Guzmán by the Mexican authorities and his extradition to the United States.
The authorities in Mexico City officially announced the arrest and said that Guzman was transferred to a secure facility at an undisclosed location.

Large military and police forces were deployed in the city of Kualikan due to the operation and many of its streets were blocked to traffic.
The airport in the city, which has more than a million people, was closed to flights for hours while the police and gangs fought street battles nearby.
Little is known about Ovidio Guzman, except that he is a senior in the drug organization headed by his father.
He was arrested for a short period in 2019 but managed to escape arrest.
The father, who was nicknamed "El Chapo", or "the little one" in Spanish, was one of the most brutal drug lords in the history of the drug trade and also specialized in escaping arrest and imprisonment.
In 2015 he escaped from prison in La Palma prison in Mexico when his men dug a tunnel for him under his prison cell where a motorcycle was waiting for him.
The criminal became the center of the series "El Chapo" on Netflix and also appeared as a character in the series "Narcos".
