Over the past year, the number of patients in the emergency department at Al-Mowasat University Hospital in Damascus exceeded 100,000, in addition to 120,000 patients in the clinic department, while the number of surgeries reached 15,000, most of which are major surgeries, according to the general director of the hospital, Dr. Issam Zakaria Al-Amin.

The number of laboratory examinations during the same period, as mentioned by Dr. Al-Amin in his statement to SANA reporter, reached 1.5 million, while the number of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images reached 6,500, 10,000 CT images, 50,000 echo exams, and 3,500 the number of industrial college sessions, indicating that the hospital He was also a pioneer last year with regard to kidney transplantation, by performing 159 surgeries out of 329 kidney transplants performed at the level of Syria, or about 50 percent.

Dr. Al-Amin explained that the hospital continued its work during the year 2022 from two basic starting points, the first is service, as it continued to provide its free medical services according to high foundations and standards that are commensurate as much as possible with the medically recognized quality standards, through 36 specialized divisions present in the hospital covering all aspects of medical work. As for the second starting point, it focused on the issue of permanent and sustainable development, through the completion of many development projects in the hospital to improve the performance of services, whether in the medical or academic aspect. During the month of June, a group of these projects was launched at a cost of more than two billion Syrian pounds. An anti-smoking clinic, as well as a pain clinic for patients who have lost all methods of treatment, whether surgical or pharmacological, under the supervision of specialists in this type of therapeutic approach by injecting substances into the spinal cord.

The development projects, according to Dr. Al-Amin, also included the automation of work in the admissions office and linking it to the informatics department, whereby each patient is provided with an electronic card with a barcode to ensure that the burden is reduced on the citizen when taking appointments, and the cladding of the emergency complex has also continued to reach about 90 percent so that it will be ready for investment by the end of the year. 2023, indicating that after the completion of the cladding, it will begin to provide it with medical equipment and hotel bedding, and prepare the necessary cadres for it.

According to Al-Amin, the complex is considered the largest ambulatory complex, not only in Syria, but also at the level of neighboring countries. It consists of 11 floors and includes 173 beds, 27 intensive care beds, 7 operating rooms, and an academic amphitheater equipped with all audio-visual means and linked to the operating rooms, in addition to that its roof will be equipped with a runway. Able to receive helicopters for road ambulance and deal with accidents that occur in areas far from the city, as well as dealing with stubborn cases and transferred from provincial hospitals, and this is known in all countries of the world with ambulance air transport.

Al-Amin pointed out that the opening of the ambulance complex will achieve a quantum leap in the Syrian emergency system, and the hospital will be able to receive 1,500 patients per day instead of 500 patients, as it will be equipped with all the necessary means and devices such as medical imaging devices, cardiac catheterization, and all means, whether therapeutic or investigative, necessary to approach all cases.
