In many cities in Germany, the situation escalated on New Year's Eve.

The situation in Berlin was particularly explosive.

Even before the interior committee of the Berlin House of Representatives deals with the New Year's Eve riots, there is now a dispute about the form of the work-up.

Domestic politicians from the SPD, Greens and Left factions accused the CDU faction of populism.

The background is a questionnaire in which the CDU also asks for the first names of suspects with German nationality.

"The CDU is dropping its right-wing populist mask," said the SPD's domestic policy spokesman, Tom Schreiber, of the dpa news agency.

Vasili Franco of the Greens said: "This is a spread of racist resentment."

The contribution by the Left Party's domestic policy spokesman, Niklas Schrader, triggered discussions on Twitter: »The #CDU has submitted questions for the interior committee on #Silvester2022 and is asking for the first names of the German suspects.

Apparently to deny them being German.«

The domestic political spokesman for the CDU, Frank Balzer, explained that his party was concerned with transparency.

The previous information from the police on the nationality of the suspects was not sufficient for this.

One wanted to know whether suspects with a German passport had a migration background.

According to the emergency services, this is the case.

"If there is a problem there, we have to know about it and disclose it without prejudice," says Balzer.

According to the Berlin police, the 145 suspects arrested included 45 Germans and 17 other nationalities, including 27 Afghans and 21 Syrians.

94 of the 145 are younger than 25 years, 27 are even minors.

Interior Senator Iris Spranger (SPD) will explain the latest figures and findings on the New Year's Eve riots in the interior committee on Monday.

Police President Barbara Slowik and State Fire Director Karsten Homrighausen are also expected.
