In addition to enthusiasm, noise and fine dust, fireworks also generate waste - and not too little of it.

Records were even broken in some Bavarian cities.

Nuremberg – After a two-year Corona break, shooting and shooting was allowed again in Germany.

Millions of euros were blown into the night sky.

Before the turn of the year, the Association of the Pyrotechnic Industry (VPI) calculated that around 120 million euros would be spent on fireworks in Germany.

And next year it could be even more.

The largest German manufacturer wants to increase prices – by around 70 percent.

Record-breaking amount of New Year's waste in Nuremberg

But what remains when the colorful light images in the sky have gone out and the fountains have sprayed their last sparks - a lot of garbage.

At this turn of the year there was a lot to do.

A record-breaking 25 tons of New Year's waste came together in Nuremberg alone.

Numerous spent rockets and firecrackers as well as bottles and other rubbish flooded the streets of the Franconian metropolis.

According to a spokeswoman for the city, so much has never happened in recent years.

At the turn of the year 2019/2020 there were around 18 tons of New Year's waste, in the previous years around 20.

The spokeswoman for the city of Nuremberg also expressed a suspicion as to why there was so much garbage this year.

She put it down to the mild weather that prevailed at the turn of the year.

In addition, the administration also assumed a certain catch-up effect.

Since no fireworks were allowed to be sold due to Corona in the past two years, there are no figures for the amount of waste.

In Munich, almost 50 tons of New Year's waste accumulates

Almost twice as much waste as in Nuremberg was generated in the Bavarian state capital.

The Munich city cleaning department had to dispose of 47 tons here.

The year before it was only 32 tons.

In the third largest city in Bavaria - in Augsburg - at least eight tons of garbage came together, according to a spokeswoman for the city.

But even the small amount compared to the other two cities set a new record for the Swabian metropolis. This was revealed by environmental officer Reiner Erben to the

Augsburger Allgemeine

.

He also noted that garbage in public squares and streets has increased significantly compared to the years before Corona.
