Bordeaux Gradignan prison is still, sadly, talked about.
On Tuesday, a prison guard was violently attacked by an inmate because he refused to let another person share his cell.
Like all French prisons, the Gradignan detention center is facing prison overcrowding, with more than 200% cell occupancy at the end of 2022. A dramatic event, but unfortunately almost trivial, deplores the UFAP-UNSA union, recalling that “
attacks take place every week
” approximately in the establishment.
What happened on Tuesday, however, was particularly violent.
“
Our colleague could have been killed
”, specifies the union.
Facing him, an inmate "
who has given himself the right to decide who comes or not to his cell
".
After entering the room to explain to the prisoner that he was obliged to share his cell, "
the officer had no time to do anything, the prisoner grabbed him by the neck and thrown his head against the edge of the metal bed
”.
A “delinquency ready for anything”
With severe bleeding from his forehead, the guard found himself on the ground and the inmate allegedly punched him.
His colleagues managed to drag him out, "
bleeding and practically unconscious
".
The guard spent the night at the Bordeaux University Hospital for observation.
Still suffering from vomiting 24 hours after the fact, he must return to the emergency room on Thursday.
His attacker was taken into custody on Tuesday.
If he is sentenced again, the UFAP-UNSA has asked the prosecution to transfer him to another prison establishment.

It is out of the question that this continues and that he comes back
”.
Moreover, denouncing an "
explosive situation
" within the establishment, the union underlines a lack of staff in the face of a recurring problem of prison overcrowding and "
delinquency ready for anything
".
