The Prosecutor of the Nation of Peru, Patricia Benavides, announced this Wednesday changes in the Public Ministry in order to put order in the investigations carried out by the institution and give greater emphasis to those that focus on deaths that occurred in the context of the sociopolitical crisis of December 2022.

"It cannot be denied that out there there is a cry for justice that we cannot ignore," he emphasized.

Benavides said that the Public Prosecutor's Office will investigate any act that has infringed the law "comes from whichever side it comes from", and that "it was ordered that the prosecutors place special emphasis on the investigations and determination of responsibilities for the unfortunate events that occurred".

"No life is worth less than another and no death should go unpunished," he said.

The National Prosecutor referred to the 28 people killed last December, 22 of them during the protests and another six in traffic accidents or trying to reach health centers when the roads were blocked, according to the Ombudsman's Office.

The protests in the country occurred after the frustrated unconstitutional dissolution of Congress by the then president, Pedro Castillo.

After the dismissal and detention of Castillo for the alleged crime of rebellion —which his defense rejects—, the then Vice President Dina Boluarte assumed the Presidency, according to what is established in the Constitution.

The mobilizations called by different social organizations have restarted after the end-of-year festivities.

The protesters are calling for the closure of Congress, the resignation of President Boluarte, the calling of a referendum on the possible installation of a Constituent Assembly and new elections.

The Ombudsman's Office asked to avoid violence in these mobilizations.

Boluarte supports the Prosecutor's Office

Prosecutor Benavides delivered her speech during the opening of fiscal year 2023, together with President Boluarte, the President of Congress, José Williams, and the highest authorities of other State institutions.

After Benavides' words, Boluarte also added that he ratified his "full support for the work of the Public Ministry, so that it can consolidate and strengthen its work."

The president also made reference to the protests, which are restarting this Wednesday in various parts of the country.

“(Peru lives) one of the most challenging circumstances in its history, a circumstance that demands effort, commitment and responsibility.

The transitional government that I lead has started a dialogue process with all sectors without exception, no one should feel excluded from the dialogue, we are not only going to listen, but also to solve the urgent needs that have not been attended to for years”, he added.

Also coinciding with the restart of the protests, this Wednesday the Monitoring Center was installed at the Air Force Command Post of the Ministry of Defense, which will work 24 hours every day, and will concentrate representatives and coordinators of the sectors and State institutions to monitor in real time what is happening in various areas of the country where mobilizations were announced.

The local media RPP reported this Wednesday that President Boluarte said that, although the vast majority of citizens who protest do so as a result of their unattended demands, there is "a minor group linked to drug trafficking and illegal mining" that generates violence, shots of airports and that they have a "political and economic interest". He also pointed out that in this group there are people who have served sentences for terrorism that fuel violence in demonstrations.

Boluarte reiterated that there will be no impunity in the case of the deaths that occurred during the mobilizations last December.

A delegation from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights visited Peru at the request of the country's government to gather information on said political and social crisis.
