The United Nations Security Council convened tonight (Thursday) for a discussion on the ascent of the Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben Gabir, to the Temple Mount on Tuesday. The discussion was initiated by the Palestinians and was preceded by their request by the United Arab Emirates, which represents the Arab countries in the council.
Prior to the discussion, the evaluation In Israel, it was said that no decisions are expected to be made in it. Political officials expressed confidence that the US will protect Israel in any case should a conflict develop in the council.
An Israeli source told Israel today that the holding of the discussion over 48 hours after Ben Gabir's ascent to the mountain - an ascent that did not draw any reaction on the ground - points to the irrelevance of the UN.

Officials in the political system rejected the claims of damage to Israel's political standing following the incident.
A political official told Israel today that "the Americans did not condemn Israel and neither did European countries. There was expected criticism from Arab countries and one rebuke to Israel's ambassador to Jordan. We should not get carried away with the meaning of these things."
Israel's ambassador to the UN said before the debate that "the debate in the Security Council is ridiculous and unnecessary, which was set up only because the UN is a distorted and biased body in which Israel is discriminated against.
I myself visited the Temple Mount as Minister of Internal Security, and I will make it clear again tomorrow in the debate, that Jewish visits to the Temple Mount are not a violation of the status quo and anyone who says otherwise is misleading and causes security and stability to be undermined."
In the meantime, Foreign Minister Eli Cohen spoke on the phone yesterday with Turkey's Foreign Minister, Mevlot Çebusulu.
In response to the Turkish Minister's expression of concern about Minister Ben Gabir's ascension to the Temple Mount, Foreign Minister Cohen replied that Israel is committed to maintaining the status quo on the Temple Mount and Ben Gabir's ascension does not constitute a policy change, and freedom of worship in Jerusalem will be preserved for members of all religions.
Chabusulu congratulated Cohen on taking office.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that "the ministers positively noted the return of the ambassadors of the countries and the visits of senior officials in the past year. The foreign ministers emphasized the importance of continuing the process of developing relations between the two countries, with an emphasis on economic relations, and the need to maintain an open dialogue."
