The director of the puppet theater, Salwa Al-Jabri, who died yesterday, is considered one of the first female directors who went through the experience of directing the puppet theater in Syria since the sixties of the last century, as she worked to involve the Syrian puppet theater in Arab and foreign festivals, through which it received many certificates of appreciation.
During her artistic career, which spanned for years, the late artist presented several puppet theater performances, including “The Treasure Play” by writer Dalal Hatem and the translated play “The Guardian of the Forest, My Friend”, which was presented several times, the last of which was in 2021, and she dealt with many Syrian writers, where she was honored by the Directorate Theaters and Music in 2019 for all of its theatrical works, at the Children's Theater Festival.
The late woman described the state of the child's interaction with the puppet theater as enjoying the puppet because from the beginning of his life he deals with a puppet next to him, whether it represents a child or an animal. Of his family, but the doll communicates ideas indirectly.
The editor-in-chief of Theatrical Life magazine, Joanne Jean Bean, told SANA that the late director of the puppet theater, Salwa Al-Jabri, is considered one of the first female directors who underwent the experience of directing a puppet theater in Syria, if not the first since the establishment of this theater in the early sixties of the last century, then it is for nearly Forty years she has been working to devote this kind of theater in our society to keep pace with the interests of children, if not on a daily basis, then on occasions, festivals, and the dates of theatrical seasons.
He pointed out that Al-Jabri was always keen to choose theatrical texts for children with a moral and educational dimension, in addition to her endeavor to preserve the aspect of fun and suspense in the works she presents to children, and her eagerness to deal with seasoned and experienced artists in this type of theatrical work.
It is noteworthy that the late Salwa Al-Jabri holds a master’s degree in directing puppet theater from Bulgaria, when she took over the children’s theater from 1985 to 2003 and worked during her administration to revitalize the puppet theater, by directing new plays and restoring other old shows.
