Germany and the US announce an agreement to send armored vehicles to Ukraine

The German government announced on Thursday an agreement with the United States to send more weapons to Ukraine, including armored vehicles.

As announced by the German Executive after a telephone conversation between Chancellor Olaf Scholz and President Joe Biden, both countries will send their own armored vehicles: the US will supply its Bradley and Berlin its Marder.

The statement does not indicate how many armored vehicles will be sent, where they will come from or when they will be delivered.

Both countries have announced that they will train Ukrainian forces in the use of both vehicles.

Berlin's decision marks a change in position on arms supplies to Ukraine, largely in response to France's announcement yesterday to send AMX armored vehicles to kyiv.

Likewise, Berlin has agreed to provide a battery of Patriot anti-aircraft missiles from its own arsenals, to complement the shipment that Washington had already announced.

Guterres celebrates a ceasefire in Ukraine, but warns that it does not replace a "just peace"

The UN Secretary General, António Guterres, said Thursday through a spokesman that he would celebrate "any truce" between Russia and Ukraine during Orthodox Christmas, but he has warned that any pause in hostilities cannot replace a "peace fair" in accordance with the United Nations Charter and international law.

Russia has announced a 36-hour ceasefire on the entire Ukrainian front on Thursday to celebrate Orthodox Christmas Eve and Christmas (which are carried out according to the Julian calendar).

However, Ukraine, through presidential adviser Mikhailo Podoliak, has rejected the proposal and demanded that Moscow withdraw from Ukrainian territory to obtain a truce.

The UN gives up further investigation into an attack that killed more than 40 Ukrainian prisoners in July because Russia does not allow access

The UN Secretary General, António Guterres, announced in August a fact-finding mission, requested by both parties.

However, the UN has admitted that Russia has not done so and therefore the mission is meaningless.

The US and Germany are skeptical of the Russian announcement of a truce

The United States and Germany were skeptical on Thursday of the Russian government's announcement of a 36-hour truce starting at noon (Moscow time) on Friday.

US President Joe Biden has told reporters during a visit to the border with Mexico that he believes that Russian President Vladimir Putin is looking for "oxygen" with the measure, officially in commemoration of Orthodox Christmas.

"He had no problem bombing nurseries, hospitals and churches on December 25 and the new year," Biden recalled.

Meanwhile, the German Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock, has indicated through her Twitter account that "the so-called ceasefire will bring neither freedom nor security to the people who live in fear daily under the Russian occupation."

"If Putin wanted peace, he would send his soldiers home and the war would end. But, apparently, he wants to continue the war after a short pause."

A Zelensky adviser demands that Russia leave Ukrainian territory if it wants a truce

The adviser to the Ukrainian presidency, Mikhailo Podoliak, was the first senior Ukrainian official to react to Moscow's official announcement of a Christmas truce, reiterating his refusal to stop arms while Russia continues to occupy Ukrainian territory.

Hours earlier, Podoliak had rejected Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill's proposal for a Christmas truce, saying it was a "cynical trap" and a piece of "propaganda".

Now, through his Twitter account, he has insisted that "Russia must leave the occupied territories; only in this way will it achieve a 'temporary truce'." Save yourselves the hypocrisy ", he has pointed out.

Moscow has cited Kiril's request as the main reason for the 36-hour ceasefire, which should begin on Friday at 12:00 Moscow time (11:00 Ukraine time, 10:00 Spanish peninsular time).

For Podoliak, the Russian Orthodox Church has encouraged and favored the war in Ukraine from the beginning.

Putin orders a 36-hour Christmas ceasefire

(Europa Press)
