Danger before the 2023 state elections: Berlin's mayor Franziska Giffey (SPD) is criticized for the New Year's Eve riots - because a comrade moans.

Berlin – The riots from New Year's Eve follow Franziska Giffey (SPD) into the new year 2023: Because of the riots in Berlin, the governing mayor is suddenly under criticism.

In particular, her foster father Heinz Buschkowsky (SPD) sharply attacked the head of the town hall and accused her of incompetence.

For Giffey, this comes at a bad time.

Because in a few weeks she will have to tremble for re-election in the state elections.

This is reported by Kreiszeitung.de.

Riots on New Year's Eve: Franziska Giffey (SPD) comes under pressure before the state elections in Berlin

But a party friend of all people is now making life difficult for her in politics.

After the riots in Berlin on New Year's Eve, Heinz Buschkowsky (SPD) called for swift action and harsh consequences against the criminals.

But the "authority" is doing the exact opposite, wrote the former district mayor of Berlin-Neukölln in the tabloid newspaper

BZ

.

"She babbles, as always." The "mistress", as he called Giffey, was outraged.

But you have a year to prevent a renewed escalation.

"Yes, madam," Buschkowsky continued, "that's exactly what will happen if the system of organized inactivity continues to take hold."

Riots broke out across Germany on New Year's Eve.

Police officers and firefighters had been attacked in several cities, including with firecrackers and rockets.

The attacks were particularly violent in Berlin-Neukölln, which is why a heated debate has broken out in recent days about how to deal with the often young offenders.

A general ban on firecrackers has also been discussed.

Buschkowsky was mayor in Berlin-Neukölln until 2015, gaining a reputation as a tough "law-and-order" politician.

After his departure, Giffey took over, but she first became Federal Minister for Family Affairs in 2018 and finally Governing Mayor of Berlin in 2021.

In recent years, however, she had fallen out with her former sponsor Buschkowsky.

Already on Thursday, the comrade had

accused Giffey of "cuddly justice" in a

world interview.

Franziska Giffey: After the New Year's Eve riot in Berlin, the governing mayor promises improvement

Giffey himself sees himself wrongly cornered – and received support from Bremen's mayor Andreas Bovenschulte (SPD).

However, the social democrat sees a rethinking of the judiciary as necessary in view of the violence suffered by children and young people during the New Year's Eve riots.

According to the dpa

news agency, Giffey said on Friday a few weeks before the state elections

that it was important to punish the crimes quickly and consistently, especially in the case of young people who committed multiple crimes .

“How much we are committed to ensuring that the penalty follows quickly.

That young offenders still know what they are being sentenced for.” Giffey acknowledged that the subject of speedy criminal proceedings is not new.

However, Giffey says that it has been somewhat neglected in recent years.

"I think we need to get back there."

Giffey demands a quick reaction and refers to the Neukölln model from a Berlin youth judge

The SPD politician recalled the commitment of the Berlin youth judge Kirsten Heisig, who died in 2012.

The so-called Neukölln model goes back to their intention, the aim of which is the rapid punishment of minor offenses by young offenders.

The police, public prosecutor and court work closely together.

The juvenile proceedings are primarily about an educational effect.

In the view of the Governing Mayor, a quick response from the state is also important because the situation has worsened over the past two years.

"The restrictions imposed during the corona pandemic had a massive impact on children and young people and had an even stronger effect in social hotspots," explained Giffey.

State election 2023: According to polls, Giffey has to tremble for office in the Berlin election

The timing of the debate is extremely unfavorable for Giffey.

The state elections in Berlin are scheduled for February 12, 2023.

Due to errors, the vote on the House of Representatives and on the twelve district assemblies must be repeated.

This was preceded by a judgment by the Berlin Constitutional Court, which found serious omissions in the September 26, 2021 elections.

These include, among other things, too few ballot papers, some of which were also distributed incorrectly.

Giffey currently governs with a slim majority in a red-red-green alliance.

But the coalition is shaky and re-election is by no means certain.

Because the CDU and Greens also have legitimate hopes of becoming the strongest force in the capital.

According to a survey by Insa, the SPD currently has 21 percent, as does the CDU.

The Greens are just behind with 20 percent.

Then come the left (12 percent), the AfD (10 percent) and the FDP (6 percent).

But the survey was before the New Year's Eve riot.

It is quite possible that the wind has already turned.
