Garmisch-Partenkirchen – Rosi Mittermaier is dead. The news shocked numerous people on Thursday morning, January 5, and not only ski fans were deeply affected.

"Gold-Rosi", as the 72-year-old was affectionately known, was born in 1950 in the Bavarian community of Reit im Winkl, district of Traunstein, and died on January 4 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

Ever since winning double gold at the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, she has been considered a German skiing icon.

This is shown by the numerous expressions of condolence from the foreign press and international Twitter users.

"Another one for the roll of honour: former ski racer Rosi Mittermaier, a two-time gold medalist in the 1976 Winter Olympics, passed away after a long illness.

The international Twitter account of Deutsche Welle, “DW Sports”, wrote that Rosi Mittermaier even competed with football legends Franz Beckenbauer and Pelé in terms of popularity in Germany.

The Swiss public broadcaster "RTS", the French ski magazine "Ski Chrono" and the Twitter account of the Bundesliga club FC Schalke 04 also posted expressions of grief on Twitter.
