A bang caused a stir in Frankfurt on Thursday morning.

It comes from a garbage truck driving through the city center with its contents on fire.

Frankfurt – At 9:38 a.m., a loud bang startled many residents in downtown Frankfurt.

Looking towards Grosse Eschenheimer Strasse, residents could see flames rising from the back of a garbage truck.

A picture of the incident can be seen on the Twitter profile of the Frankfurt Fire Department.

The FES employees acted at the speed of thought: the garbage truck drove straight to the waste incineration plant in Heddernheim, while it was accompanied by the fire brigade and police with flashing blue lights.

The burning garbage was dumped and extinguished on site in a safe environment and under the guidance of the fire brigade.

"The entire FES team reacted very prudently to the situation," said Florian Ritter, the press spokesman from the Frankfurt fire department, to fnp.de.

If extinguished on site, the fire brigade "would have had to empty the entire contents of the landing area in the city center".

The Frankfurt garbage collectors have thus prevented great chaos and mess in the city centre.

The reason for the big bang and the fire is still unclear.

Stefan Röttele, responsible for Public Affairs at the FES, can only make a guess: "It could have been an unemptied spray can."

For the garbage workers of the FES, however, this is not an unusual incident.

"Battery packs or the like that have not been disposed of cause fires in vehicles and waste management systems time and again," says Röttele, adding: "It is important that nobody was injured and that no damage was caused.

Our employees' decision to drive there slowly and with the fire brigade was the right one."(Patryk Kubocz)

Just a few days ago, a residential and commercial building caught fire in Frankfurt.

The Mainzer Landstraße had to be partially closed.

There was chaos in rush-hour traffic.
