A man and a woman were attacked this morning (Friday) in Kibbutz Shanir in the Upper Galilee.

The two were bitten and taken to Ziv Hospital in Safed for medical treatment and vaccination against rabies.

After several hours of wandering in the settlement, the jackal was shot and sent for examination.

There is a reasonable chance that he was infected with rabies.

The 60-year-old woman, a resident of Shanir, went out to the parking lot of her house and then was surprised when a large adult jackal attacked her.

He bit her leg and injured her.

After she managed to free herself from him, she reported the incident.

Two hours later, the jackal attacked a 40-year-old man who was walking near the perimeter fence of the settlement.

He was slightly injured and was referred for medical treatment.

The two victims were released to their homes.

Following the second assault incident, Shanir's security coordinator arrived at the scene and managed to shoot Tan.

Michal Lahav, the director of the community in Shenir, said that following the incident, a notice was published in which the children's parents were asked not to send them to the children's homes for fear of an attack by the jackal.

"It could have ended very badly. A child would not have managed to free himself easily from such an attack and could have been hurt in his upper body and even more seriously injured," she said.

"It seems that they are not afraid of the proximity of humans and sometimes move around in groups."

Lahav later added that jackals wandering around the kibbutz had already become commonplace.

"It seems that they are not afraid of the proximity of people and sometimes move around in groups of up to five. Today's case raises concerns, especially about a similar attack on a child. This is an unusual and very stressful event. The situation is unpleasant and it is really traumatizing."

This is the second case of rabies in a year that just started a week ago.

Yesterday a jackal infected with rabies was found in Kfar Reger.

Last year there were 29 cases.

All of the cases were found in the north of the country, from the Gilboa area - the valley of the springs to the Galilee and the Golan.

It should be noted that in the records of the veterinary services of the Ministry of Agriculture, a case of rabies will enter the list only after the animal suspected of having the deadly disease was caught, sent for testing at the rabies laboratory of the Veterinary Institute, and the testing revealed that it was indeed infected.

Therefore, if the attacking animal, usually a jackal or a dog, has behavior typical of an animal infected with rabies - it will not be included in the number of cases unless the animal is caught.

In other words, in fact, it is certain that the real number of cases is greater than the amount reported to the list of the Ministry of Surveys.

In recent months, there has been a significant increase in the number of animals infected with rabies in the northern region.

It should be noted that this is a fatal neurological disease with a 100% mortality rate for both humans and animals.

The virus is transmitted to people through a bite, scratch, licking mucous membranes or injured skin.

It affects all mammals, and is transmitted in saliva, mainly by biting.

The disease can be prevented in animals with a vaccine given ahead of time, and in humans through a series of vaccination injections that are given after exposure to the virus and protect against the development of rabies.

The last time a woman died in Israel from the deadly virus was in 2002. Before that, in 1997, three people died in Israel from rabies, including a soldier.

What do you do in case of a bite?

According to the guidelines for the prevention of rabies in humans, contact with animals should be avoided.

It is important to note that an animal vaccinated against rabies can get sick and infect with rabies.

In addition, animals should not be collected and children should not be left with an animal without supervision and they should be warned against contact with a strange animal.

In case of contact, the animal must be located and identified so that it can be quarantined if necessary, it is recommended to photograph the animal.

If it is a domestic animal - it is necessary to locate the owner's details.

The Ministry of Health clarifies that in any case that a person is bitten, scratched or comes into contact with an animal - the affected area should be thoroughly and immediately washed with running water and soap, disinfected with disinfectants and urgently contact the health office nearest to their place of residence, in order to consider the need for preventive treatment against rabies.
