A deadly fire broke out in Mei Huai House, Mei Lam Estate, Tai Wai today (6th), resulting in 1 death and 6 injuries.

Firefighters found a combustion accelerant in the fire unit, and the fire spread quickly, which was unusual, so the cause of the fire was considered suspicious.

Wang Tan, assistant fire chief of the Fire Department, said that the fire alarm was reported at 5:46 this morning, and he arrived at the scene within 4 minutes. A total of 60 personnel from 9 fire trucks and 5 ambulances were dispatched to the scene for rescue. In addition, the fire investigation team and Fire dogs were also at the scene to assist.

The fire area is 6 meters by 5 meters, and the fire is quite violent.

The firemen broke into the unit and found a 15-year-old female dead near the gate, and found the male householder in the toilet, unconscious.

In addition, the female head of the household was found in the stairwell between the 26th and 27th floors. She suffered burns on her face and hands. Four neighbors on the floor where the accident occurred were sent to the hospital because they felt unwell due to smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is believed to be suspicious because of the accelerant found at the scene and the rapid spread of the fire, which is unusual.

Wang Tan pointed out that since the fire broke out in the early morning, most of the residents were fast asleep, and the firefighters needed time to evacuate them down the building.

The dead and injured in the fire included the 15-year-old deceased, the male and female household heads of the fire unit, and 4 neighbors (16 to 63 years old).

Superintendent Huang Xiaoxuan, Commander of Police Tianxin Division, pointed out that the 45-year-old female head of the household was surnamed Zhang, and the deceased was her daughter, while the 40-year-old male wounded was her boyfriend. All three held Hong Kong ID cards and had no record of domestic violence.

The police and fire department are investigating the cause of the fire.
