(CNN) --
Italian soccer great Gianluca Vialli has died at the age of 58, according to one of his former clubs, Chelsea.
Vialli died after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
Chelsea posted a photo of Vialli on Twitter with the caption: “You will be missed by many.
A legend for us and for all football.
Rest in peace, Gianluca Vialli."
The official account of the Italy national soccer team also shared a tribute, writing: "Ciao Gianluca, you will always be remembered."
Vialli announced in December that he would leave his post at the Italian national federation for health reasons after consulting with his oncologists.
Gianluca Vialli had publicly battled cancer for years.
He first announced that he had received treatment in 2018, but said he was doing "very well" in an interview with an Italian newspaper.
Another bout of illness quickly followed in 2019, before his former club Chelsea announced that he had overcome cancer in 2020. Last year, the former footballer announced that the disease had returned.
Vialli played for Italian clubs Sampdoria and Juventus and Chelsea in the English Premier League and made 59 appearances for Italy.
He was part of the Italy team that finished third in the 1990 World Cup.
