The municipality of Pantin, which decided to symbolically rename itself "Pantine" in 2023 to raise awareness of gender inequalities,

Definitely, in Pantin, we don't mess with spelling.

Unless it's the fight for gender equality that irritates some... This week, the city of 59,000 inhabitants found itself at the heart of a media storm after deciding to add the letter "e" in his name, symbolically becoming "Pantine" for a year in order to raise awareness among its inhabitants of gender inequalities.

A change that quickly ignited debates on television channels and social networks, where many commentators abhor inclusive writing which consists of feminizing words with the use of the midpoint (the Pantinois.es), therefore the principle that the masculine should not systematically prevail over the feminine.

Pantine is not written Pantin.

e, but who cares: the controversy was launched!

If this change has no legal value, the mayor of the city Bertrand Kern (PS) intends to use it in his communication media.

Thus this Thursday, Place de la Pointe, on the edge of the Canal de l'Ourcq, the famous blue module bearing the logo of the city was lengthened with an "e" to become "Pantine".

"A malicious person taped this letter, but a Pantinois reacted and repaired it immediately"

Less than 24 hours later, the final letter was vandalized.

Suffocated by a garbage bag, gagged with moving tape, the poor vowel was not spared.

No doubt she was too heavy to be kidnapped by her detractor(s).

“The letter E was added to the letters from Pantin installed on Place de La Pointe on Thursday, confirms the town hall.

A malicious person taped this letter, but a Pantinois reacted and repaired it immediately.

The municipality did not file a complaint.

Opposition elected Geoffrey Carvalhinho (LR), who had criticized the previous days "the communication operation" of the municipal majority, also "condemned this act of vandalism".

Will this linguistic tension fall as quickly as it rose?

Possible… This Friday, “Pantine” was already no longer trending on Twitter.

The City has promised to organize other actions to raise awareness of gender inequalities.

Curiously, in Pantin, they are probably lower than elsewhere.

According to INSEE, the average net hourly wage for women there is 16.1 euros… compared to 15.8 euros for men!
