Adding dozens of new dentists every year isn't enough

Li Huiqiong, chairman of the Democratic Alliance for Betterment of Hong Kong, and Legislative Council member Chen Hengpin released the "Dental Service Development Blueprint and Public Dental Service Policy Proposal" today (6th).

They pointed out that there are only about 3.7 dentists for every 10,000 citizens in Hong Kong. If about 30% of the dentists serving in the public dental medical system are subtracted, the number of private dentists is even smaller, and there are only dozens of new dentists every year.

The Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong proposes to add 2,000 yuan of dental care vouchers for the elderly, which can be used locally or across borders, and relax the upper limit of medical voucher accumulation to 10,000 yuan.

It is also proposed to increase the establishment and functions of dental therapists under the Department of Health, so that they can treat people aged 18 or above under the supervision of dentists, so as to strengthen the service capacity of dental "street diseases".

Increase dental post training and introduce overseas trained dentists

In the mid-to-long term, the DAB suggests referring to the revision of the Doctors Registration Ordinance, and introduces an alternative method of exempting overseas trained dentists to serve in Hong Kong's public medical system. It also believes that dental medical services can be included in the regular public medical system.

The DAB proposes to organize regular lectures and workshops for staff and caregivers of residential care homes for the elderly, and establish a regional dental care consultation network so that caregivers can find help.

As for children, consideration can be given to incorporating dental care into the Comprehensive Child Health and Development Program and extending the School Dental Care Program to Secondary Three.

The vacancy rate of government dentists reaches 15%.
