RANKING - After a year marked by a strong recovery in travel, many airlines have faced repeated delays. However, some have managed to hold their own.

This summer, the multiplication of scenes of chaos in airports in the summer will have marked the passengers.

Between delays and cancellations, many travelers had no choice but to wait patiently for the next flight, in conditions that were not always optimal.

Unpleasant scenes still experienced recently in the airports of the Philippines, after a generalized blackout.

However, in this airport slump, marked by a rise in the price of plane tickets, a few players have managed to hold their own.

This is what Cirium, a company specializing in aeronautical analysis, notes in its latest report published a few days ago.

Several airlines, which operate internationally, have succeeded in distinguishing themselves through their punctuality, starting with Azul Brazilian Airlines, based in Brazil.

Of nearly 280,000 flights made over the past 12 months, 88.93% arrived within 15 minutes of the scheduled time at the boarding gate.

The top 3 is completed by two Japanese companies: All Nippon Airlines, with an punctuality rate of 88.61% for some 162,000 flights performed, and Japan Airlines (88% for nearly 166,000 flights performed).

No European company appears in the world Top 10, largely dominated by North and South American companies.

Why such a result?

“One of the most significant causes of the decline in on-time performance has been the global shortage of personnel on every stakeholder in aviation – airlines, airports, air traffic management and others

,” observes Cirium in its report.

"This has led to flight delays, cancellations, long queues at airports and air traffic congestion."

And this, particularly on the Old Continent.

Important hubs, such as Heathrow Airport in London, had to reduce their flight schedule during the summer due to a lack of staff.

Cirium has also drawn up the ranking of the most punctual European companies.

Good first: Spain.

Our Iberian neighbor occupies the first four places in the Top 10, with first Iberia (85.87% punctuality for 91,154 flights operated), followed by Air Europa (84.10% for 48,163 flights), Iberia Express ( 83.80% for 35,665 flights) and low-cost Vueling (82.04% for 197,546 flights).

Austrian Airlines completes the Top 5. Air France is absent from the rest of the ranking.

The French airline, on the other hand, appears in 10th place in the European ranking of “Network winners”, which corresponds to flights marketed by an airline, but operated by another partner company.

It posted a punctuality rate of 73.16% for 277,354 flights performed.

1. Azul Brazilian Airlines (Brazil): 88.93% punctuality;

What about airports?

Japan remains in a good place, since Tokyo-Haneda International Airport occupies the top of the ranking for the second consecutive year, with a rate of 90.33% punctuality for more than 370,000 flights made.

It is complemented by Kempegowda, India, and Salt Lake City, USA.

The rest of the Top 10 is largely dominated by the North American continent.

A suprise ?

Not really, according to Cirium.

“The North American region has been the fastest to recover [its air traffic], because of its heavy reliance on domestic traffic.

The territory should reach 90% of its 2019 traffic level by the end of the year

,” explains the specialized company.
