Farewell to sadness: At the garages at the youth center in Geretsried, young people make a statement with graffiti and show what moves them to make a difference: Corona measures, rubbish, more seating for young people.

Geretsried - The Geretsrieder youth center juice shop has received a new spray paint.

Two expressive pieces of graffiti art have recently adorned the garage building at the Saftladen youth center.

Under the motto of the supporting association for youth and social work (TVJA) - "Our city of the future - I'm moving something!" young people expressed what really moves them and what they want.

In addition, they managed to get a new table tennis table - now the youth are moving in front of the juice shop.

"The idea came up in November 2021. A young person was ordered to do community service at our youth center because of illegal spraying," explains Torsten Benz, social worker at the Saftladen youth center.

It turned out that something was moving the boy and that tagging (spraying letters on surfaces, mostly illegally) was intended to convey a message to the outside world

Since this is not an isolated case, the juice shop's social workers thought about how they could combine the young people's urge to convey a message, legally, with art.

The aim was to offer the adolescents a contact point and to tackle issues that move them in a constructive way.

This is how the TVJA came up with the idea of offering a project that encourages young people to make a difference under the motto - "Our city of the future - I'll make a difference!".

Solidarity and good conversations at the fire barrel

"It wasn't that easy," explains Benz.

Because at the beginning the young people had no vision at all.

"At that point in time it was lockdown, which suddenly made it impossible for all visitors to meet in the juice shop," says TVJA Managing Director Rudi Mühlhans.

The young people spontaneously decided to continue meeting in front of the juice shop so that everyone can be there, he explains.

In freezing temperatures, visitors struggled with the Corona regulations.

And so that the young people could warm up, a fire barrel was set up.

There were good conversations here, during which the visitors realized where they are now and what they want for the future.

"These wishes were the basis for the graffiti artworks on the garages," said Benz, "this time shaped the young people and they wanted to capture that".

So everyone involved got to work on the concept and the first drafts.

The status quo was that the adolescents wanted covered, illuminated seating so that meetings would be more charming and people could sit together comfortably - i.e. youth benches.

"What the children still wished for were rubbish bins," the social worker continues.

Quite banal rubbish bins, because the rubbish bins at typical youth clubs are too small and there is a lot of rubbish lying around.

Set something in motion with desire for change

The pictures you can now see on the garages represent the initial situation at the time and the change requests: lockdown situation, self-determined change with meetings at the fire barrel in the courtyard of the juice shop, littered benches behind the garages and a nice, covered, illuminated seating area.

The young people achieved the latter on their own initiative in spring 2022.

The first covered youth bench is now in the city forest on the exercise course.

In the future there will be a new table tennis table at the juice shop

Not only art has recently beautified the youth center from the outside, but also a new table tennis table since October.

Thanks to the youth budget made available, the record could be purchased.

In addition, there was a subsidy of 1090 euros from the 'Bavarian Action Plan for Youth' of the Bavarian State Ministry for Family, Labor and Social Affairs through the Bavarian Youth Council (BJR) as part of "Äktschn Oberland".

"So that the young people can also play table tennis outside of opening hours, a concrete slab was set up outside," says Benz.

The new board was inaugurated with a table tennis tournament.

The juice shop kids are already looking forward to more games together and show: "I move something".
