Supreme Court President and retired judge Aharon Barak said this evening (Saturday) that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agreed to a plea deal, and that the proposal to which Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit agreed included an amendment to the indictment, the cancellation of the bribery offense and the remaining of the two additional charges.

Barak said these things in interviews he gave to news channels, in which he expressed his position on the reform of the judicial system presented this week by Justice Minister Yariv Levin.

Barak said that he received a call from Netanyahu's lawyers, and that they came to meet him.

"They said they were ready for a plea deal. I thought it was a great idea and called Mandelblit who agreed. They also talked to Mandelblit, not just me."

In response to the question of whether Netanyahu was willing to admit fraud and breach of trust - Barak replied "Yes, the court will decide on the defamation. The idea was that at the base of the plea deal - he (Netanyahu) would retire from political life."

According to him, "He was very close to the deal, suddenly the Prime Minister got cold feet and went backwards".

Barak also said that if the parties had reached a plea deal, Levin's reform would not have been launched.

Barak said that he expressed support during: "I was part of the parties that dealt with this question. I was in favor of a plea deal, I think it was not a mistake, I think that the reality as we see it now only proves that it was not a mistake. And finally, I am in favor of a plea deal even today This, this moment too."

"Ready to face a firing squad to stop the shakeup"

The former supreme president expressed himself unusually when he said that he was ready to "stand in front of a firing squad" if his death would bring an end to the legal-political upheaval in Israel.

"I'm sorry that you see me as an enemy of the people. I always thought that I was serving this people, that I was doing everything I could and that the judgments I gave, thousands, are judgments that connect with our history, with our Zionism, with our security. I don't see myself as an activist In any case, I don't see myself as a conservative in any case. So I'm sorry that they think that I brought this trouble. If they thought that killing me would stop all this upheaval, then I'm ready to face the firing squad," Barak said.

Netanyahu: "I never agreed to admit guilt"

On behalf of Prime Minister Netanyahu, it was stated: "Prime Minister Netanyahu never agreed to plead guilty to fraud and breach of trust, and if he had agreed to this, a plea deal would have been signed a long time ago and the trial would have ended. Every day that passes in the trial reveals the truth and illustrates why Prime Minister Netanyahu refused to admit in any offenses".
