At "Bares for Rares" antiques are turned into money.

But the popular ZDF format is not always ideal.

A trader reports that he once received death threats on Instagram.

Pulheim – Who doesn't dream of coming across a priceless treasure while cleaning out the attic?

It doesn't matter whether it's an heirloom from your grandparents, a dusty porcelain vase or a yellowed painting - what often doesn't look that valuable at first glance turns out to be a real find of the century in some cases.

In order to have such objects appraised by experts and to make money, the ZDF hit "Bares für Rares" has been opening the doors to hopefuls for a decade - and has changed the lives of many sellers forever.

"Really violent": "Bares for Rares" star David Suppes receives a death threat on Instagram

After the exquisite find was examined by the panel of experts led by Dr.

Heide Rezepa-Zabel (57) and Albert Maier (72), it is up to David Suppes (34) and the other dealers in the sales hall to make their potential customers an unbeatable offer.

Born in Wiesbaden, he has been sitting at the awesome desk since 2019 and has already been able to fulfill the dream of big money for many studio visitors.

However, as the TV star recalled in a Bares for Rares Instagram video, a frightening incident once happened to a fan of the show.

"There was a gentleman whose girlfriend followed me on Instagram," David Suppes looks back, "I don't know what he was thinking, what's happening there somehow.

I didn't even know that she was my follower."

As the art dealer explains, the man must have become quite jealous because of that: "I got real hate mail at some point and it really went, I'd say, almost towards death threats .

Really hard." Fortunately, the likeable brown haired boy kept calm and ignored the threatening message: "I just didn't answer and didn't do anything."

Hate comments on social media

Instagram has over 1.2 billion monthly users worldwide - but many users have to endure hate and abuse on the image platform and other social media networks.

According to a survey by the University of Leipzig, 24 percent of all respondents were said to have been victims of hate speech on the Internet last year - in the 16 to 22 age group even half.

While Instagram is cracking down on hate comments, banning abusive accounts and imposing fines, it openly admits that tracking private messages is far more difficult.

“We act on hate speech as soon as we learn of it.

In addition, we are constantly improving the detection to identify them faster,” the company said in a statement in early 2021.

"It's not possible": Fans react to death threats against "Bares for Rares" star David Suppes

David Suppes has received a lot of encouragement online for his shocking story: "Something like that doesn't work at all," complains an Instagram user, "Unfortunately, some people tick a little differently," joins an outraged viewer.

His fans can well understand that the "Bares for Rares" star deliberately did not answer the message.

"Poor David.

But I think you reacted correctly.

Just ignore it," writes one user, while another would have gone a step further: "Would have blocked both immediately."

Unfortunately, in the celebrity world, it often happens that stars on Instagram receive hate, threats or hostility from their followers - even if they just want to share personal snapshots with their loyal followers on the image platform.

Luckily, David Suppes seems to have gotten over the frightening incident well and can concentrate fully on pricing antiques again.

Meanwhile, his "Bares for Rares" colleague Horst Lichter strikes secret deals behind the camera.
