A spectacular night-time search operation, in which the dog unit was deployed around Vaterstetten and Grasbrunn, ended well.
On Wednesday afternoon, a 68-year-old resident was reported missing to the PI Poing by the nursing service of a nursing home in Vaterstetten
.
According to the officials, the elderly gentleman left the retirement home around 10 a.m. and wanted to visit his mother, who lives in Garching near Munich.
But he never got there.
The pensioner, who was still active, was described to the police as disoriented and in danger of falling.
Therefore, "immediate search measures" were initiated by the PI Poing.
It's getting dark - the missing person can't be found at first
The first measures taken, such as the local search, communication with and raising awareness of relatives and acquaintances, were initially unsuccessful, the officials explain in the follow-up report.
After dark, the search measures were intensified and expanded together with other police forces from the Erding task force and the fire brigade in cooperation with the 49-strong rescue dog squadron.
Due to the weather combined with gusty winds, neither drones nor the helicopter squadron could be used.
Helicopters and drones cannot fly - dog squadron moves out
After the dogs headed south from the nursing home to Neukeferloh (Grasbrunn municipality, Munich district), additional police forces from the Munich police headquarters, a total of 5 patrols, were ordered.
An area of about 40 hectares (400,000 square meters) was then searched together, the officials report.
Unsuccessful: The search was called off around 1:30 a.m.
Search extended to the municipality of Grasbrunn and canceled - until a coincidence helped the rescuers
A continuation of the search during daylight became unnecessary because, according to the police, the 68-year-old was noticed by a patrol by the Deutsche Bahn security service at the station in Leuchtenbergring and they informed the federal police.
Through this, a connection to the missing persons case of the PI Poing could be established.
The missing person was safely returned to his care facility.
