The end of German liberalism towards immigrants?
Following the severe violent clashes between young people and security forces and rescue forces, which took place in large cities in Germany - mainly in the capital Berlin - on New Year's Eve, the teachers' unions in Germany are calling for increasing the integration of immigrants and their descendants by limiting the number of children of immigrant origin in schools.
The violent clashes, during which police forces, firefighters and first aid teams were deliberately attacked, were initiated by young people with an immigrant background from Middle Eastern and Muslim communities.
Among the young people arrested by the Berlin police following the violent riots were dozens of Afghan and Syrian immigrants, as well as dozens of German citizens of immigrant origin.
The extent of the violence has sparked a lively public debate in Germany about the failure of the mass immigration absorption policy.
The heads of the teachers' organizations recommended in the framework of this discussion to limit the number of students of immigrant origin in schools and classes, in such a way that these students would not make up more than a third of all students.
According to the heads of teachers' organizations, in classes where the number of students of immigrant origin exceeds 35%, the teaching and integration abilities are decreasing.
In classes where the percentage of students of immigrant origin reaches 95% there is no chance of implementing any kind of integration.
Teachers in schools throughout Germany have been complaining for years about violence, which has taken over the school space, following the inability to control students of immigrant origin.
The teachers' organizations also demand that German language proficiency tests be held before assigning students to schools.
There is also a need for a mandatory study program, before sending immigrant children to schools.
The idea of limiting the number of students of immigrant origin was already raised by the conservative minister of education in Angela Merkel's government in 2017, following the "refugee crisis", but was not implemented.
In Germany's current center-left government, there is opposition to the implementation of limiting the number of students.
The current Minister of the Interior, Nancy Pazar, from the Social Democratic Party, expressed opposition to the initiative of the teachers' organizations.
