In an attempt to stop the nationwide demonstrations against the regime, Iran executed today (Saturday) two men who were allegedly convicted of killing a military man during a demonstration.

The two men, Muhammad Mehdi Karmi and Muhammad Husseini, are added to two other men who have been executed since the protests began in the country in September, as a response to the death of Mahsa Amini.

Iran's Meezan news agency said the men were convicted of killing Rohollah Ajamian, a member of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards' Basij volunteer force, in the town of Karaj outside Tehran on November 3.

Activists say at least 16 people have been sentenced to death in closed-door hearings on charges related to the protests.

Death sentences in Iran are usually carried out by hanging.

At least 517 protesters were killed and more than 19,200 people were arrested, according to human rights activists in Iran.

Iranian authorities have not provided an official count of those killed or detained.

As you may recall, the protests began in mid-September, when 22-year-old Amini died after being arrested by Iran's morality police for allegedly violating the Islamic Republic's strict dress code.
