Liang Hong, the third-generation head of the Liangtian Knife Factory, confirmed that the demolition work will be carried out after 10:00 p.m. next Wednesday (11th).

Fortunately, local artist Rex has expressed his willingness to accept the signboard, and "Big Knife" was able to escape the fate of being sent to the landfill.

Rex was interviewed by "Hong Kong 01" and described himself as just a signboard custodian: "This signboard does not belong to me, it belongs to the residents of Sham Shui Po District." When I was studying, I saw "Big Sword" every day on the bus to and from school, so I became acquainted with it. Rex was born in Singapore and settled in Hong Kong after his father came to Hong Kong to work from time to time. He is now an artist.

When asked how many signboards in Hong Kong have been demolished or will be demolished, and why he only wanted to keep the "big knife" of Leong Tim Knife Factory, Rex replied without thinking: "Because I have feelings for the signboard of Leong Tim Knife Factory, I want to keep it. "He recalled that when he was studying, he would take the bus home every day. On the way, he would pass by the shop of Leung Tim Knife Factory and see the signboard of "Big Knife": "It (signboard) is a part of my life, and it has changed my life. This kind of feeling has something to do with connection.”

By chance, I met the third-generation person in charge of the knife factory "Big Knife" signboard free of landfill

However, the reason why Rex had the opportunity to collect the "Big Sword" signboard that is full of memories for him is all due to a coincidence.

He said that he met Liang Hong, the third-generation director of "Liang Tim Knife Factory" during a dinner. During the conversation, he learned that the signboard of the shop would be demolished. He immediately expressed his willingness to accept it: "Liang Sheng is so generous. I didn’t ask me anything, I just told him my thoughts, saying that I want to preserve a signboard and make it a part of my artistic creation.” Boss Liang immediately agreed to his request, “Da Dao ” sign was able to escape the fate of being sent to the landfill.

Plan to shoot a documentary for Leung Tim Knife Factory to bring "Big Knife" to overseas exhibitions

Rex said that he believes that real art should not just be kept at home, but should be displayed to the public for appreciation, because it belongs to the collective memory of Hong Kong people: "The signboard does not belong to me, it belongs to the residents of Sham Shui Po District." He hopes that in the future Art exhibitions related to signboards can be held in Sham Shui Po and open to the public.

In addition, Rex also plans to shoot a documentary for "Leung Tim Knife Factory" after the demolition of the signboard, to record the stories behind the store's operation for more than 40 years in the form of oral history and images.

At the same time, he hopes to bring the signboards overseas for exhibitions in the future, so that overseas people can appreciate Hong Kong's unique local culture and street characteristics.

Dismantling the old signboards and taking away the Hong Kong characteristics: There are still collective memories of Hong Kong people

Rex attended Pui Ching Secondary School when he was in middle school. He believes that his alma mater is like a microcosm of Hong Kong society.

He said that Pui Ching Secondary School has a total history of 133 years. The facilities on the campus are a blend of old and new, but they have not been fully integrated.

He gave an example. There is a very eye-catching "rotating round staircase" in the art building of Pui Ching Middle School. At first glance, it looks very elegant and has a strong historical atmosphere. A piece of thick glass destroyed the original style and beauty.

Rex used this as a metaphor for the government’s decision to dismantle old-style signboards in order to take public safety into consideration: “The circular staircase is a very distinctive place, and they were afraid that something would happen, but after doing this action, it would be even more troublesome. "Rex said: "If these signs are removed, it may still have its original characteristics and the collective memories of Hong Kong people."

If these signboards are removed, it may still have its original characteristics and the collective memories of Hong Kong people.
