Hong Kong Customs seized about 4.9 million suspected illicit cigarettes in Kwai Chung yesterday (6th), with an estimated market value of about HKD13.6 million and a taxable value of about HKD9.4 million.

Through intelligence analysis yesterday, customs officers identified a batch of goods that were reported to contain card holders at a logistics yard in Kwai Chung and were about to be shipped to Australia.

After inspection, Customs found about 1.9 million suspected illicit cigarettes inside the cargo.

Subsequently, officers inspected another batch of goods that were also shipped to Australia and reported to contain bicycle seat cushions at the same logistics site, and seized about 3 million suspected illicit cigarettes.

The case is still under investigation.

Customs said smuggling is a serious crime.

According to the "Import and Export Ordinance", anyone who imports or exports unmanifested goods, upon conviction, can be fined up to 2 million yuan and imprisoned for 7 years. Possessing, selling or buying illicit cigarettes is an offense and the maximum penalty upon conviction is a fine of $1 million and imprisonment for two years.
