Geneva-SANA

The World Meteorological Organization stated that a number of European countries witnessed an unprecedented rise in temperatures during the festive period at the end of last year, compared to weather conditions during the same period last year.

And the French Press Agency quoted the organization as saying in data: This happened as a result of the warm air from northwest Africa that came to the mid-latitudes, and the air temperature increased when crossing the North Atlantic due to the higher sea surface temperature than usual.

The organization stated that in the northeastern Atlantic Ocean, the sea surface temperature was 1 to 2 degrees Celsius higher than normal near the coast of Iberia, and all of this caused record heat in many European countries during New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.

She pointed out that this unusual rise broke records for recorded temperatures, pointing out that, based on scientific information from the Intergovernmental Committee on Climate, the frequency of cold and frost waves will often decrease, and the sharp decline in snow cover, ice masses and the period of snowfall in places. The rising temperatures will continue in a warming world.

Two months ago, the organization issued a report on the state of the climate in Europe for the year 2021, which stated that temperatures over Europe rose significantly during the period between 1991 and 2021, by an average of plus 0.5 degrees Celsius per decade, which is the highest rate on any continent in the world and more than double the global average. The year 2022 will be the fifth or sixth warmest year globally.
