María Faría resigned this Thursday as representative of the Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó before Costa Rica, following the end of his so-called "interim government", Costa Rican Foreign Minister Arnoldo André Tinoco confirmed this Friday.

In a statement, he explained that on January 5, both Faría and "two other officials of that diplomatic representation" ceased their functions.

"The Government of the Republic is analyzing the steps to follow in order to respond to the consular needs of both Costa Ricans residing in Venezuela and Venezuelans who live in or transit through Costa Rica," he added in the bulletin.

Costa Rica does not have consular representation in Venezuela.

The Consulate of Costa Rica is in Colombia and, in case a Venezuelan needs to carry out a procedure before this office, he must do it in that country.

Costa Rica was part of the more than 60 countries that at some point recognized Guaidó as interim president of Venezuela and, therefore, where his representatives acted as ambassadors.

Faría's resignation responds to the decision adopted by a majority of former opposition deputies of the National Assembly of Venezuela —with a mandate between 2016 and 2021— to withdraw support for Guaidó.

On December 30, they approved the reforms to the Statute Law that governs the "Transition to Democracy", the legal basis that allowed the then president of the Assembly to proclaim himself as interim president of the country in 2019.

Instead, they appointed a delegated commission with the function of seeking the protection of some of the country's assets abroad, led by Dinorah Figuera.

Thus, this Thursday the period of the "interim government" led by Guaidó officially ended.

The Venezuelan opposition does not recognize President Nicolás Maduro or the Legislative Branch as legitimate.
