At the CES, BMW took a look into the future with the i Vision Dee study.

But the polarizing retro design primarily provokes mockery on the internet.

Geneva, Paris, Detroit: For a long time, the automotive world looked to these metropolises when a trade fair was held there.

But since more and more cars have become computers on wheels – now mostly also powered electrically – the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas is becoming increasingly important.

The Munich-based carmaker BMW also had its grand entrance there and presented the i Vision Dee study, which is intended to provide a preview of the so-called "New Class" that is to be launched in the middle of the decade.

The Munich design has been controversial for a long time - among other things because of the "giant kidney".

And this time, too, the echo in the social media was enormous - but not in a positive sense.

No question: The chances of series production of the retro-futuristic sedan i Vision Dee are close to zero - which of course has to do primarily with a special show feature: the exterior paint has a color change function.

A total of 32 tones can be displayed using the E-Ink technology used.

However, such concept vehicles usually give a glimpse of the design future of a car manufacturer - and that's exactly what seems to scare many fans of the brand, as the comments on BMW's numerous Instagram posts about the study show:

  • "That's it - I'm going to buy a Benz."

  • "I hope this is a joke."

  • "The end is near."

  • "Seriously, fire the entire design team!"

  • "If this is the future, I want to live in the past."

  • "And I thought it couldn't get any worse than the iX."

  • "It scares me about what cars will look like in a few years."

Netz laughs about the BMW study at CES – the brand's design has been controversial for a long time

The change in BMW design has been controversial for a long time: first the giant kidney in portrait format on the M3 and M4 shocked the fans, then the cool design of electric cars like the iX.

The 2021 IAA study i Vision Circular also largely caused horror on social media.

The car manufacturer is aware of the criticism, but design boss Domagoj Dukec announced some time ago that he did not want to move away from it.

Incidentally, anyone who has ever been to Las Vegas knows that the gambling metropolis has a kind of motto: "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas" - "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas." However, this is probably not the case - obviously to the chagrin of many brand fans.

You actually have to use a magnifying glass to look for positive comments on the BMW Insta posts about the “Dee”.
