INTERVIEW – It will take several years before feeling the benefits of the budget increases granted to justice, estimates the first magistrate of France.


First president of the Court of Cassation since July, he is now the first magistrate of France.

After two years of open war of the institution against the executive, he places his mandate under the sign of appeasement.

- What priorities do you give to your mandate?

Christophe SOULARD.

I intend to defend the fundamental role of the courts in our society as spaces for the peaceful and organized resolution of conflicts.

As such, I am determined that the Court of Cassation, which must be a model, give more visibility to the way in which it settles questions of law and makes its decisions better understood.

In two disciplinary cases, you cleared the magistrates while raising the suspicion of conflict of interest of the Keeper of the Seals.

Isn't it worrying that this bad relationship between politicians and magistrates continues?

That would be a shame.

But it is not perpetuated since I have calm relations with the Keeper of the Seals.
